The Media s Ideal Body - 1933 Words

The Media’s â€Å" Ideal Body† Todays media portrays a standard of beauty for women of an unrealistic weight and an overall appearance which leads people to believe they need to have an â€Å"ideal body†. In particular, girls, 91% of teen girls are unhappy with their bodies (Article: 11 facts about body image, Do something campaign). The teenage years are a time when people are naturally self conscious. Teens can be more vulnerable to media influences about body image and how they â€Å"should† look. In as single day we can be subjected by up to 500 advertisements. These ads portrayed perfectly airbrushed models that are unrealistically thin and have zero â€Å"flaws†. There are also numerous ads assuming we want and need to look like the models. They†¦show more content†¦She had the idle body image for that decade, tall with a wide bust and hips. In 1910-1920 when the flapper look was in, the ideal look was a skinny girl with a smaller bust. Around 1930-1940 during the war, big ger shoulder pads where the style with naturally curvy figures. In the 1950’s the big push to be curvy came as Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly were huge influences. Everyone wanted an hourglass figure and being skinny was not in fashion. There were lots of ads about how to gain weight. Then in the 1960’s the media became interested in Twiggy, the skinny, boyish looking model. Their views changed to focus on the importance of being skinny. No matter the year or the â€Å"ideal body shape of the decade† the media has impacts on how we try to be and fix ourselves. We have recently seen more articles and public speeches on how the media is negatively influencing our society. People are beginning to realize how much of an influence the media is having on teens. There are many studies being conducted with middle and high school students proving information on the influence of advertising. Children are being influenced at such an early age that by the time they get into high school they already have low self esteem and want to change themselves to fit into the unrealistic standards of beauty they see advertised. Monomyth Cycle in Star Wars Free Essays

The once there was a galaxy far far away where one man had to learn about becoming a hero and finding himself through his journey. You may know of this story because there was a clue in the first sentence. Yes, this is the story of Luke Skywalker and his journey to become a Jedi knight. We will write a custom essay sample on Monomyth Cycle in Star Wars or any similar topic only for you Order Now However, you may not realize that during the filming of Star Wars IV, the director worked very closely with Joseph Campbell. What is a mythologist doing on the set of one of the greatest science fiction of all time? Well Luke experiences what Campbell calls the Monomyth Cycle, during the movie. While Luke followed this path there were some relevant parts of the cycle that defined him the most. When he crosses the threshold into his 2nd world, Luke finds himself lost in a new world. During his road of trials, Luke finds his purpose through the tasks he must perform. Lastly, Luke’s efforts to join the Dark side are being planned to ruin the universe’s hopes of freedom. Crossing the threshold is when the hero first crosses into the second world, which is unknown to him. Luke is seen here as a man who left his friends in hopes of completing his mission to become a Jedi knight. He leaves the ice planet of Hoth and leaves for Degoba where he is to meet the great Jedi master Yoda and learn from him. This step according the Campbell is to be very rocky transition into the hero’s new world. And likewise, Luke crash lands on the unknown planet of Degoba and at first sight the planet is a dense forest with unknown creatures. Immediately after he lands and dismounts from his ship, R2-D2 is eaten by a sea monster but soon returned to Luke. While trying to fix R2 Luke first a weird green alien, who helps Luke find shelter in his hut. Luke urges the alien that he must meet with master Yoda and finds that the alien is actually Yoda. Immediately Luke feels he is ready to become a Jedi but Yoda informs Luke that his father was reckless and he was powerful (Star Wars V). Luke feels disheartened but he is determined to become a Jedi at any cost. Luke finally finds the master and planet he was looking for but Yoda tells him that he will gain fear through his training. During the road of trials the hero must overcome obstacles in order to find his place in the new world. In Luke’s case, he meets master Yoda and must learn to become a Jedi in order to save the universe. In his first task Luke must overcome and become physically fit in order to train his mind from succumbing to evil. Luke passes this task with ease with Yoda’s guidance. The second trial was when Luke entered the cave on Degoba where he faced his worst fear. He sees Darth Vader and then slays him but he sees himself as Vader and finds that his worst fear is to join the Dark side. Then Luke must learn to use the force because the force is a Jedi’s life essence and a true Jedi can manipulate the force to work to his needs. His third trial trains him to lift stones, clear his mind, and focus while using the force. However, he learns that the force can give him the sight to see the future the present and past. This scares Luke at first because he sees his friends in peril and he chooses to help them. When Yoda and Obi-Wan persuade him to stay and finish his training, he agrees but when Luke learns to use the force with more ease, his next trial is the get his ship that had crashed when he landed in Degoba (Star Wars V). Yoda informs him that the force can help Luke get his ship back, but only if he can focus. He fails because he thought of the ship being too big for the force to move it. The next trial he must go through is to complete his training on Degoba but he fails to become a true Jedi and leaves Degoba (Star Wars V). Through this step in Luke’s cycle you see the hardships he had to overcome. Throughout the movie Darth Vader and Darth Sidious are formulating a plan to force Luke into the dark side of the force and be used as an extension of the Empire’s power over the universe. This is first seen when Sidious tells Vader to try to turn Luke to the dark side and be used as an asset to the empire and the Emperor’s power. Vader follows Luke throughout the movie to get in direct contact with him but he realizes that Luke will only face Vader if Luke’s friends are in danger. Vader goes to Cloud City and holds Luke’s friends captive until he receives word that his prey has finally come to him. Luke battles his way through the invaded city and to the chamber where he meets Vader. In the final battle with Darth Vader Luke is constantly asked to join the dark side and Vader finds himself trying not to kill him. During the battle Vader tells Luke that his place in the new world is with Vader and Emperor and that only Luke’s hatred can destroy Vader (Star Wars V). A Jedi must never hate or love because it is the path to the dark side (Star Wars III). Some archetypes appear in this part of the movie where Luke is clothed in white and is seen as the hero and Vader is seen as a shadow in all black and the temptress. After Luke gets his hand cut off, Vader tells Luke that if Luke joins him in the Empire he can complete his training and begin his reign. Vader further tells Luke that he can kill the Emperor and rule the universe alongside him as â€Å"father and son† (Star Wars V). After reviewing the preceding evidence it is clear that Luke’s journey in his Monomyth Cycle had defining steps that showed him new worlds, tested him and was tempted by evil. During Luke’s rocky entrance into his new world, Luke finds himself in peril early but escapes. He meets a green alien that will teach him to become a Jedi and be able to become a new hope for the universe. During his road of trials Luke proves to Yoda that he is too weak to become a Jedi even though he faces his fears of joining the dark side, clearing his mind, and focusing on using the force. Luke chooses his friends over completing what he sent out to do. Lastly, in the final battle of the movie Luke is tempted to join the dark side or die with hopes of controlling the universe with his father and killing the Emperor to do so. The MADE group currently had offices and personnel located in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. This strong network of outreach gives the company a national distribution network that services 20000 retail customers, who range from independent customers to the largest retail chain in Australia. The valued network intertwined with the companys manufacturing facility established in Melbourne give the company very best resources to register the innovation of new products to the market and to enhance the delivery of products. Statement of Problem and Opportunities The Made group company, which is based in Scoresby, Melbourne, Victoria, in Australia plans to take its fresh milk product into the Chinese market. It is important to know that the company is currently a local enterprise since its operations take place within the Australian territory, and this project is the first international marketing plan that the company is carrying out. It forms the basis of the outcome of the marketing strategy, to suit the target market and the company nature. The biggest challenge is identifying a marketing plan that would suit the current portfolio of the company, as well as be relevant to the target market. Swot Analysis The nature, location, and strategies of the company would affect the performance of the company in the new market that the company is prospecting to establish their services. It is the same scenario with the Made Company since it has strengths, weaknesses, opportunity areas, and threats (Helms Nixon, 2010, p. 216). Therefore, this section will examine strengths of the Made Company, its weakness, the opportunities that it has, and the potential threat that it will experience in its new market venture. Strengths The first strength of the Made group is a valued distribution network that would enable the company to distribute their merchandise in China. Through this enhanced distribution network, the company can distribute its products to 20000 retail customers, ranging from independent to customers to the largest retail chains in China. Although the current networks is based in Australia and only operates within the location currently, it has the potential to an extent the same of using the same network to service its customers in china. The second strength of the MADE Company is that it has the ability to serve a big customer base. Currently, it serves over 20000 retail customers, both independent and retail chains, which imply it will be able to serve the market in China effectively. The company is therefore assured of having customers at any given time. Considering these strengths, the company will be able to establish itself strategically in the market of china (Kajanus et al., 2012, p. 3 ). Weaknesses The greatest weakness that the Made Company has is the lack of international experience in the beverage market. From the establishment of the enterprise in the year 2005, it has been carrying out its activities within Australia. Therefore, it has not experienced the real dynamics of the international market, since some aspects of the market can only be learned when the company is part of the market. This lack of experience in the global platform gives other companies a better advantage over it. Also, the company has only been in operation for ten years, a period that may be limited to the amount of time that some companies have spent in the market, both the local market and the international market. It is also possible that the company has not gone through all the aspects of local markets that may come once after a long time. For the example, it experienced the financial crisis 2007, when still a beginning company, and may not have felt the real impact of the crisis like what it woul d have experienced if it were a fully developed company by then. Another weakness that the company faces is having a limited variety of products. Although the company is venturing into other products, the post established products are the beverages, citing overreliance on the products (David Hanson, 2013, p. 2122). Opportunities The market in China has a wide range of opportunities that the company ought to clinch and establish itself. The first is the large market that is presented by the large population of China. Secondly, Made is a company that is flexible to venture into a variety of new products that would help the company to establish itself in the international market. For example, fresh milk products is a new venture; the company can as well venture into new products that relate to it. Made Group Company, also has the opportunity of establishing a good profile in the international market since it is the first time (Fleisher et al., 2010, p. 216). Threats The biggest threat that the company faces is competition from other multinational companies with superior international Experience. When the company launched its first enhanced water beverage, many multinational companies launched products of the same type. Now in the international market, it is expected that more companies will imitate Mades products. Finally, the company faces economic threats like if a financial crisis arises. The company may not be able to handle since they have minimal experience in the international markets (Hoberg et al., 2014, p. 293). Figure 1: SWOT Analysis Market Choice In this project, the Made Group Company has chosen focus on is China. Made Group is going to launch a fresh milk product to operate in the Chinese market. Therefore, the company aims to become an international company for the first time since its launch, with its pioneer venture being in China. China was chosen for this venture because China is in the process of rebalancing its economy, transforming into a consumer-driven economy. This process of rebalancing presents huge opportunities for retailers, making it possible for local and foreign firms to expand continuously into the market. Market players have to search for ways to adapt to the changing landscape of the retail sector of China Evolves. This need to adapt to a better working plan has given rise to a high level of competition (Deng et al., 2010, p. 293). Right now, the worlds second largest retail market is China. From 2008 to 2012, the sum of sales of products at consumer level in China has doubled. It was 10.8 trillion Yuan in but it has increased to 20.7 trillion Yuan. This trend predicts an even higher value in the period 2012-2016. Additionally, it is expected that China will go beyond the United States and settle as the largest market three years from now (Li, 2012, p. 1952). The rate of evolution of the market is almost as quick as its growth. Consumers are gaining higher income and increasing affluence, making them demand for quality products and services. China is also a well-evolved country regarding technology, making it one of best locations to produce quality products (Li, 2012, p. 55). China has a huge consumer base because of the huge population that the country harbors. This potential of getting a huge consumer base, with the need for quality products gives Made a chance to get a potential and ready market for their Fresh milk product (Chen et al., 2010, p. 127). The Chinese market has a characteristic of elevated impact of digital marketing. The fact that social media has a big influence on consumer buying products gives the Made Group a better chance of marketing their fresh milk product to the population at a lower cost, resulting in higher returns. Mobile commerce is the popular aspect of the China market. Mobile transactions have been important to the market because they have made transaction values to increase tremendously. In addition, the cost of the transactions has reduced, giving retailers a better chance to gain better profits in their sales. Regarding mobile transactions, Made group will be able to sell their fresh milk product to the consumers effectively and at lower transaction costs, making it possible to make huge returns (Lu, 2010, p. 350). Consumption is growing fast in the lower tier cities with the current increase in income and urbanization. Over the next few years, the lower tier cities are expected to be the focus for retail development (Deng et al., 2010, p. 290).
